What Is a Mile Builder?

A sailing mile builder is exactly what the name suggests – an opportunity to gain valuable sea miles while sailing with an experienced skipper.

Many sailors join mile builders to:

• Build miles towards an RYA qualification or Yachtmaster exam.
• Gain experience in different weather conditions.
• Improve boat handling skills.
• Learn passage planning and navigation.
• Experience longer offshore passages.
• Increase confidence before buying or skippering their own yacht.

While the logged miles are important, they are only one part of becoming a competent skipper.

The Problem With Some Mile Builders

Unfortunately, not all mile builders are run with learning in mind.

Some trips are designed simply to move a yacht from one marina to another. The priority becomes reaching the destination as quickly as possible. If the engine needs to be used for eight hours to keep to a schedule, that's exactly what happens.

The miles still count.

But the learning opportunities are often missed.

On some trips, one or two experienced sailors naturally end up doing most of the work while newer crew become passengers. Before they know it, several days have passed without ever helming into a marina, trimming sails properly or planning a passage themselves.

Everyone has the opportunity to helm, trim sails, navigate, pilot into harbours, take part in passage planning and complete pilotage under supervision.

You won't spend five days sitting on the rail watching someone else sail the boat.

Flexible Itineraries

Unlike delivery trips, our destination isn't fixed months in advance.

If the weather presents an opportunity to explore somewhere different or practise a new skill, we'll often adapt the plan.

That might mean:

• Sailing overnight.
• Practising coastal pilotage.
• Anchoring instead of taking a marina.
• Crossing Lyme Bay.
• Visiting the Channel Islands or Northern France when conditions allow.
• Spending extra time sailing rather than motoring.

The aim is always to maximise the experience, not simply tick off destinations.

Real Decision Making

Good skippers don't just know how to sail.

They know when to sail.

Throughout the trip we'll involve you in weather forecasting, passage planning and the decisions behind choosing routes, departure times and safe alternatives.

Understanding why a decision is made is every bit as valuable as steering the boat.

Everyone Gets Involved

Whether you've just completed Competent Crew or you're preparing for Yachtmaster Offshore, we encourage everyone to take an active role.

Depending on your experience you may find yourself:

• Planning the day's passage.
• Calculating tidal gates.
• Navigating into unfamiliar harbours.
• Helming under sail and power.
• Reefing and sail changes.
• Night pilotage.
• Anchoring and mooring.
• Keeping a proper lookout.
• Managing watch systems on longer passages.

Our instructors are there to coach rather than simply take over.

A Typical Day

No two trips are identical, but a typical day often starts with everyone gathering around the chart table.

Together we'll look at:

• The latest weather forecast.
• Tidal streams.
• Departure times.
• Passage options.
• Pilotage information.
• Individual learning goals.

Once underway, everyone rotates through different roles. There is plenty of opportunity to ask questions, try new techniques and develop practical skills.

After arriving, we'll usually spend time reviewing the day's sailing over dinner. These informal debriefs are often where the biggest learning takes place.

We Sail Because We Want To Sail

It may sound obvious, but we genuinely enjoy sailing.

Whenever conditions allow, we'll sail.

If there's an opportunity to spend another hour under sail instead of motoring, we'll usually take it.

That doesn't mean making poor decisions or delaying unnecessarily—it simply means we believe people join a sailing mile builder because they want to experience sailing.
