RYA SRC / VHF Operators Course

Learn to use a VHF radio in a relaxed classroom environment

A VHF Marine Radio whether handheld or fixed enables communication with coast stations, port/harbour authorities and with other vessels. This form of communication is an important piece of safety equipment and it is vital to understand the correct procedures.

The RYA VHF Marine Radio Course is 1 day’s tuition with 2-3 hours of pre-course reading. Towards the end of the day you will also sit an examination with an external moderator. Please note this is a really full day with timings of 9am – 6pm and only a 30 minute lunch break, plus a couple of short comfort breaks. A packed lunch is recommended. Check in time is 8.50am.

The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.

RYA SRC Pre-Learning Requirement

All students must complete the official RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) online pre-learning module before attending the classroom course and exam.

This mandatory e-learning covers:

• Understanding VHF/DSC radio functions

• The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)

• Distress, urgency and safety procedures

• Using DSC controllers

• Correct voice procedure and channel etiquette

• Practical communication scenarios

Time required: Approximately 2–3 hours

What to bring on the day:

• Your RYA SRC Pre-Course Knowledge Check certificate

• Your SRC Exam Application Form, generated at the end of the e-learning, including proof of payment for the exam to the RYA.

Completion of the online learning is an RYA requirement. Students who have not completed it will not be able to sit the exam.
